Mortal Kombat II

Mortal Kombat II was released during an era of arcade revitalization that began with Street Fighter II and the fighter genre.  It was an unprecedented commercial success.  Developers used actors against a blue screen to create the character animation for the game, setting it apart on a technological level from the many other games of the same era.  It’s over-the-top gore and multiple execution combo moves known as “fatalities” were both the foundation for its success among arcade-goers and the cause of a major video game controversy that ultimately resulted in the game being banned in multiple countries.
